Seeking Jesus

There comes a moment in many people's lives when they begin to wonder about Jesus. Maybe you've heard His name your entire life. Maybe your family talked about Him, you attended church when you were younger, or someone recently told you about their relationship with Him. Perhaps you've encountered the Bible but never really understood what it was saying. Or maybe something has happened in your life that has caused you to start asking deeper questions about God, purpose, forgiveness, and what happens beyond this life. Whatever brought you here, you may be wondering the same thing: How do I begin seeking Jesus?

The good news is that you don't have to have everything figured out before you begin. You don't need to know the Bible from beginning to end. You don't need to have a perfect life. You don't need to understand every Christian doctrine or know how to pray perfectly. You don't even need to have every doubt resolved. You simply need to be willing to take the first step.

The Bible gives us a remarkable promise: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”(Jeremiah 29:13). Seeking Jesus begins with a sincere desire to know Him.

What Does It Mean to Seek Jesus?

To seek Jesus means more than simply learning information about Him. You can know facts about Jesus without actually knowing Jesus. Seeking Him means turning your attention toward Him. It means becoming willing to discover who He is, what He taught, why He came, and what His life means for you.

It means opening the Bible and asking, “Jesus, who are You?” It means praying honestly, even when you're not sure what to say. It means asking questions instead of pretending you already have all the answers. And as you begin to understand His teachings, it means allowing those teachings to challenge the way you think, live, love, forgive, and treat other people.

Seeking Jesus is ultimately about a relationship. You aren't simply searching for information about a historical person. You are searching for the One Christians believe is the Son of God, the Messiah, and the Savior of the world.

Begin With Jesus

If you want to seek Jesus, start with Jesus. This may sound obvious, but it is easy to become distracted by everything surrounding Christianity before you ever get to know Christ Himself. There are denominations, traditions, theological debates, church cultures, personalities, and countless opinions about what Christianity should look like. Those things can be explored later. For someone beginning to seek Jesus, the simplest place to start is with the person at the center of the Christian faith.

Open one of the Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John tell the story of Jesus' life, His teachings, His miracles, His interactions with people, His death, and His resurrection. Each Gospel gives us a different perspective, but together they point us toward the same person.

If you don't know where to begin, the Gospel of John can be a meaningful place to start. John focuses deeply on the identity of Jesus and explains why He came. Don't rush through it. Read slowly. Imagine yourself standing among the people who encountered Jesus. Watch how He speaks to the broken, the rejected, the religious, the doubtful, the sinful, and the desperate. Pay attention not only to what Jesus says, but also to how He treats people.

Ask yourself: What does this show me about Jesus? What does Jesus care about? What does He say about God? What does He say about me? What would it look like for me to follow Him?

You don't have to read ten chapters a day. One chapter can be enough. The goal isn't simply to finish the Bible. The goal is to encounter the message of Scripture and allow it to speak to your heart.

Talk to God Honestly

If you are seeking Jesus for the first time, you may wonder how you're supposed to pray. The answer is simpler than you might think: talk to God.

Prayer doesn't require complicated words. You don't need to use religious language or memorize a perfect speech. God already knows what is inside your heart. If you're confused, tell Him. If you're afraid, tell Him. If you're angry, tell Him. If you have doubts, tell Him. If you want to believe but struggle to believe, tell Him that too.

You could begin with something as simple as: “God, I want to know You. I don't understand everything, but I'm willing to seek You. Help me understand who Jesus is. Open my heart to Your truth and guide me as I learn. Amen.”

That prayer doesn't need to impress anyone. It simply needs to be honest. Seeking Jesus isn't about performing for God. It is about coming to Him.

Pay Attention to What Jesus Taught

As you read the Gospels, you'll quickly discover that Jesus wasn't simply teaching people how to become more religious. He spoke about the heart. He taught people to love God and love their neighbors. He taught forgiveness, mercy, humility, faith, generosity, purity, prayer, and obedience. He challenged people to look beyond outward religious behavior and examine what was happening inside them.

Jesus said that the greatest commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. This is important because seeking Jesus isn't merely about accumulating Bible knowledge. Eventually, what you learn has to reach your life.

If Jesus teaches forgiveness, what does that mean for the person who hurt you? If Jesus teaches love, how does that change the way you treat difficult people? If Jesus teaches humility, how does that change the way you see yourself? If Jesus teaches you to trust God, what happens when life doesn't go according to your plans?

These are the kinds of questions that begin transforming Bible reading from information into something personal.

Let What You Learn Change You

There is a difference between knowing what Jesus taught and actually following Him. You can read about forgiveness without forgiving. You can read about loving your neighbor without loving difficult people. You can read about serving others without ever serving anyone. You can know Scripture intellectually while never allowing it to reach your heart.

Seeking Jesus means allowing His words to challenge you. Perhaps you need to forgive someone. Perhaps you need to apologize. Perhaps you need to stop living for the approval of other people. Perhaps you need to become more patient. Perhaps you need to surrender something you've been holding onto.

Following Jesus doesn't mean that you will become perfect overnight. It means you begin allowing Him to change you—one step at a time, one decision at a time, and one day at a time.

You Don't Have to Walk Alone

As you begin seeking Jesus, you may eventually find that you need other people walking alongside you. Christianity was never intended to be lived entirely in isolation. A healthy Christian community can give you opportunities to worship, study Scripture, ask questions, pray, serve, and grow alongside other people who are also learning what it means to follow Jesus.

But remember something important: Church is not a substitute for seeking Jesus. A church can point you toward Him, but ultimately, your relationship with Jesus cannot be based entirely on someone else's faith.

Don't simply seek what a pastor says about Jesus. Seek Jesus. Don't simply accept what a friend says about Jesus. Seek Jesus. Don't build your entire faith on what a particular church says. Open the Scriptures. Read the Gospels. Pray. Ask questions. Search for truth.

The goal isn't simply to become familiar with Christianity. The goal is to know Christ.

Seeking Jesus Is a Journey

You may not have all the answers today. That's okay. You may still have questions tomorrow. That's okay, too. Faith doesn't mean that you never ask questions. Sometimes seeking Jesus means continuing to search even when you don't understand everything.

There may be passages you don't understand. There may be teachings that challenge you. There may be moments when you struggle with doubt. Don't let those moments convince you to stop seeking. Keep reading. Keep praying. Keep asking. Keep looking toward Jesus.

The journey of seeking Him isn't about becoming someone who knows everything. It is about becoming someone who is willing to keep coming to Him.

Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you”(Matthew 7:7).

Notice the invitation: Seek.

Not someday. Not when you become perfect. Not when you understand everything.

Seek.

And perhaps your journey begins with a simple prayer: “Jesus, I want to know You.”

That may be one of the most important prayers you ever pray. Because sometimes the first step toward Jesus isn't having all the answers. It's simply being willing to look for Him.
